Breath of God

“All Scripture is breathed out by God…”

I was thinking this morning about the Word of God described through this verse (2 Tim. 3:16). A flood of images came to mind with the beautiful description Paul gives. I just picture the cloud of fog that is created by exhaling on a cold morning. Or the thick mist that sprays from a whale as it surfaces for air. This is breathing that creates something; exhaling that is a sign of life.

In the same way, God’s Word resulted from the breath of God. When God breaths, things happen. Light appeared when before there was only suffocating darkness. Stars peppered the atmosphere because of one spoken word. Life itself awoke as God’s breath filled their lungs and creation gasped for more. God breaths life.

But I usually don’t think about this imagery when I open my Bible in the morning and try to read through my sleepy eyes. I yawn and read a few verses without ever considering that the words I am reading are the very breath of God. In fact, because the Word is living (1 Pet. 1:23), these Words are a warm breath straight from God’s mouth. It is as fresh and relevant to us now as the day the quill touched the parchment to document God’s message thousands of years ago.

Life comes from His Word. Every morning this life is freshly available for us to inhale. Our Father is breathing out hope and truth and grace on every page we turn to. That is why God’s Word is powerful. It’s living. We hear the sounds of His breathing in every word. He’s speaking to us.

Let us remember this as we open this precious Book we call the Bible. In it are the life-giving words of God speaking afresh each moment we open it. It should be taken seriously. It will be taken seriously.

And It might just steal your breath away…

  1. Hi Kaysie ~ Your words ring with conviction in my heart. I too like to read my Bible upon waking up, but sometimes I don’t always pay as close attention as I know I could. Thank you for this reminder! God’s Word is holy and perfect. There is such power to be found within its pages – how could we take it lightly?

    Blessings,
    Amanda

  2. Wow. I really like that picture you paint. And it is very true. In other words, when I avoid God and put off my Bible until the morrow, I am not only insulting God, but I am “dead” for the day since I haven’t received his breath of life….

  3. Beautiful post. Thanks for the reminder of what a gift God’s word really is.

  4. What a beautiful picture you painted, Kaysie. Sometimes, when I’m outside, and the breeze begins to blow, I imagine that it’s God’s breath. His breath cause the trees to sway with joy and praise to Him–their Creator!

  5. We live by every Word that comes from the mouth or breath of God. Every Word coming from God, is God breathed. I am learning to live by every Word and am finding that His Word contains the Life giving force that give us Zoe, or total living the fullness of Him becomes the life we live from.
That is a real blessing I got from reading Breath of God.
His Words paint pictures as I read them. Agree they are beautiful.
