Humble in Heart

“Blessed are the humble (meek, gentle) for they shall inherit the earth.” Matt. 5:5

Jesus’ message to the weak continues. He is describing through this sermon the type of people He values and blesses. He loves the lowly and poor: those who rely the greatest on Him, those who have no righteousness on their own apart from His mercy. The needy, the humble, the weak… those are the ones He praises and blesses.

This is so contrasting to the world’s system. In the world’s eyes, the people that will inherit the earth should be bold and mighty, self-reliant and independent. But those are not who God approves. The humble will one day rule, and He is opposed to the proud. He blesses the humble with grace.

Through this little study, God has been revealing many areas in my own heart that I have ignored concerning my weaknesses and frailties. I try to hide my neediness and weakness from others, including God. I want to appear strong and qualified, but Jesus only invites the weary and weak to come to Him. (Matt. 11:28 ) I findĀ self-reliance in my spirit instead of poverty of spirit, as Jesus said I should have. And I am only qualified because of His grace, not by my own works.

The virtue of humility is the fruitful soil in which God can plant and yield His harvest. To the humble only does He give grace… (1 Peter 5:5)

  1. I just started studying the Beatitudes, and this was the verse for yesterday’s study (I haven’t done today’s study yet). I really appreciate your thoughts on the verse and I look forward to reading more. This reminds me that though we are to share our faith with boldness, it must be boldness that is humble and meek.

  2. Thank you for this post! Its really uplifting in the situation Im going through right now that is really causing me to re-evaluate my humbleness. It really is easy to get caught up in the everyday and continue to think were humble enough because we go to church every Sunday or something. It is amazing though how much God really does reach out to us in the trials He gives us.

  5. I agree, very convicting. Inwardly, I’m always striving to handle things by my own wisdom, to rely on my own strength…it’s a continual battle to just surrender – to be humble in spirit. Thanks for sharing these truths. :)

  6. Humility is much like becoming like a child, being completely dependent on God, knowing we can’t do anything on our own.
