Words from the Heart
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalms 19:14
“…For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.” Matthew 12:34
Our words are an honest assessment of our heart’s condition. It is hard to hide the thoughts of our hearts because our words uncover it’s secrecy. The heart cannot be silent; it must speak about what fills it, revealing it’s position and affections, whether pure or evil.
In order to speak words acceptable to the Lord God, we must first have acceptable hearts. Countless times I have struggled in vain to correct my critical and judgmental words when the problem was not my vocabulary, but the condition of my heart. This could be similar to mowing down weeds without pulling up the root. On the surface it may appear that the sin is gone, but the root is deep and will inevitably surface again.
The fruit of the heart is our words. If our words tastes bitter, judgmental, and arrogant it is because our hearts are full of bitterness, judgment, and pride. If we extinguish the sin in our hearts and replant the seeds of kindness, forgiveness, and humility our words will imitate the heart transformation. The pure in heart will be pure in tongue.
Let us pray, as King David prayed, that our words and our hearts would be acceptable in God’s sight, for God is the only One who can change the heart.

Welcome. I'm Kaysie, 22. Jesus follower. Loves sunshine, trees, hot tea, books, music, family and the gospel. Also has a weird fascination with paper.

Amen Kaysie! I have issues with my words…thanks for the reminder!
“like mowing down weeds without pulling up the root”
I like that. Good example.
Kaysie, what a lovely, well-written post; a very good reminder, too!
I have begun reading you blog just a short while ago, but have really enjoyed it.
God Bless you,
Jenifer
Jenifer, welcome! Hope you visit again often! God bless you too.
Very true! And I liked that mowing vs. pulling up the roots analogy, too!
So what are so ways to change the condition of the heart?
Good question!
On the basis that the Holy Spirit changed the condition of our hearts at conversion, (see Ezekiel 11:19, John 14:26, Ephesians 1:13-14) I would biblically and practically advise 1) prayer, as David did, and 2) renewing our hearts through Scripture.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Isn’t God amazing? The post you wrote this morning is EXACTLY what our bible study this afternoon was addressing! Without cleaning the inside of the vessel (the heart), it is not very fruitful only to clean the outside (the mouth). The heart will eventually speak the truth of it’s condition. Jesus speaks of this in Matthew 7:6 “This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me”.
Thanks Kaysie for a great post…we constantly need to be reminded to check the condition of our hearts.
Hi Kaysie!
I just read the verse tonight — I have it on my corkboard! It is such a reminder to me that my thoughts must first be pure before my words will be. Thanks for your encouragement!

Amen. God’s been convicting me about my words as well. I’ve noticed that I say a lot of unnecessary things that don’t really build up. They don’t necessarily tear down, but they’re vain because they don’t do anybody any good.
