My Weapon of Choice
I have always loved to look at other people’s Bibles and journals. (No, I don’t snoop! I always ask first) I really don’t know why, but I am fascinated by examining how and why people journal and choose their Bibles. So, seeing that I talked about God’s Word yesterday, I thought I would reveal my own little Treasure(s) and satisfy anyone’s curiosity. (that is, if anyone else shares in my weirdness…)
I have been using the NASB for about four or five years now, and have loved it’s accuracy and readability. I have the New Inductive Study Bible, and since I enjoy Precept Bible studies (which I should really write an entire post on) this Bible is amazing for the marking and note taking. Here is my NASB below:
Now, let me just say here, I know a lot of people hate to mark in their Bibles. I used to be one of them. But the more I studied using the Precept studies, I realized how much the markings actually helped me take apart and grasp the context of the text. I am a visual learner, so this method of study is really helpful. I know it’s not for everybody, but for me it has been a real blessing and a great study help.
The only downfall (if there can be a downfall with the Bible?) is this Bible’s size. It is pretty substantial. And since I always carry my Bible around with me, it can be a little difficult to tote. So… I recently invested in another Bible that I have been eyeing (lusting?) for awhile. It is an ESV, which is a version I have really started enjoying, and it is more compact and lighter.
Isn’t it cute? I am loving it already. It is the ESV Personal Size Reference Bible. (thanks, Anna, for first introducing it to me!) The past few mornings I have loved waking up to read and study it. Here is the ESV in comparison to my NASB:
So there they are. Both of my precious Bibles that have (will) serve me well as I seek to know God more through His amazing Word. It is a Treasure.

I'm Kaysie, 22. Jesus follower. Lover of sunshine, trees, hot tea, books, music, family, the gospel, poetry and Barnes and Nobles. Has a weird obsession with paper. Over-analyzes almost everything. Adores simplicity. Lucky for you.

I love the ESV. I just got a really nice study Bible for Christmas and I love it… except for the fact that (like your Bible) it is really big. Which makes taking it to church a little more difficult. But all together I have really been enjoying it and if you were to look in my Bible there are plenty of underlined verses and notes in it. For people my age that is quite rare (sadly). Thanks for sharing.

I am one of those who doesn’t like marking my Bible, although I used to. But it was fun to get a glimpse into yours.
Olivia, so I’m not the only “big Bible” handler!
I think it is fun to underline and look back on your old notes in your Bible. Sometimes I like to date an entry and write a little something about what the passage meant to me and why. Good stuff.
Anna, thanks for letting me have a glimpse into yours! Sometimes journaling about a passage instead of underlining or marking it is just as good. I alternate with it.
I also used to hate marking my Bible! I do it all the time now, but I wish I had concocted some sort of rhyme or reason to the colors I used when I started. Now I just underline verses that hit home with what I’m currently going through. To any other person, it probably makes no sense, but I know what I mean!
Oh, and I use an Old King James version with the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. (my whole family uses it actually) We love it!
I used to have a NKJ Thompson Chain Reference!
I really loved mine too, and I still have it with my special books. It’s fun to look back over old markings, like you said. It was actually larger than my NASB now… if you can believe that!
Hey Kaysie,
Thanks for letting me “peek” into your Bible…that’s so neat! I also love to underline and write notes and thoughts in my Bible (you can see a more in depth look into how I like to study the word in my blog, under “Listening to His Words”). It’s so exciting to see other Christians who actually enjoy reading the Bible!
Kaysie,
Thanks for sharing! I love looking at other’s Bibles as well. I think I’m in between these two camps – I do high-light and underline verses a little bit, but at the same time I journal a lot because I don’t want my Bible to be too messy…funny, huh?
Anna Eliza, thanks for your comment! I would love to “peek” at your Bible study method… how exciting!
I don’t think you left a link to your blog though. Could you either email or comment with your link? I would love to check your blog out.
Steph, yes, I am guilty of the same thing! I believe it is so important to journal… but I also love to underline… so I do both!
Hey Kaysie,
Sorry…I thought my username links back to my blog but apparently it doesn’t (I haven’t figured out to set it up like that yet). Anyway, my blog is http://completelyresolved.wordpress.com/
Thanks!
Since I have a hard time learning the bible, let alone get a full grasp of the meaning…I rely on some bible studies and one of them comes from the Precept Org that publishes the Inductive Bible Studies.
I have two bibles two (well three actually- but one is my study bible and I only generally use it when I write studies or Sunday school lessons) – but both are the same version (NIV), because I am a creature of habit and It’s the version I grew up with. I love to be reading a verse and then the words become a familar rhythm cos I memoriesed it years ago.
One of my Bibles I write in and one of them I don’t, mainly becasue there are times when I want to focus only on Gods words and not be distracted by trying to work out what I wrote 3 years ago
. But sometimes it’s nice to go back and see what God taught me in that passage before too.
That first picture reminds me of my Bible!
I was just taking time this evening to visit a few blogs and noticed the story of your accident. I had never read that before – what an amazing testimony!
Take care and MAY GOD BLESS,
~Amanda~
Thank you Amanda.
