Tea and Books: August
At last, the highly anticipated (just kidding) Tea and Books post! I am thrilled to be adding this feature to my blog and hope you enjoy and discover new books and tea to taste and savor. I don’t have a huge list for this month, due to the craziness of the season, but I hope to fit in this list for August. Some of these you may remember from my summer reading list.
Please feel free to share what literary and infused findings you have with me too! I only wish we could be sitting across from one another with cup of hot tea… ![]()
Books:
Respectable Sins – by Jerry Bridges
I’m almost finished with this one. However, I think I already need to read it again, because it provided much conviction over the “subtle” sins I think aren’t noteworthy in my life. Written with a humble and sincere voice, Jerry Bridges speaks as one who sins and fails just as much as we do, but happily offers us the hope we need through the gospel and grace.
When I Don’t Desire God – by John Piper
I am just now getting into the “meat” of this book, and it has been quite a refreshment. It is teaching me how to fight for joy in Christ, even in discouragement and times of depression. I am sure I will re-read this again too. I highly recommend it.
Keep A Quiet Heart – by Elisabeth Elliot
This one I just received in the mail today! Always exciting to receive books in the mail.
I am a big fan of Mrs. Elliot’s writings and passionate heart for Jesus. She is also an author I look up to and gain inspiration from. Although I only peeked under the cover today, I am looking forward to gleaning from her wisdom through this book.
The Peace Maker – by Ken Sande
I started this book a few months ago and it was an incredible encouragement filled with practical tips on solving the inevitable conflict we encounter in this life with biblical principles. Mr. Sande writes with honesty and grace, always keeping the gospel front and center. I look forward to going through this book again.
Tea:
I drank a cup of hot English Breakfast (ok, ok, so I had two cups) this morning with my devotions, which adds to the ministering to my soul. English Breakfast is by far one of my favorite teas in the entire world. It is pleasantly amber and deliciously rich. I love dark, strong tea. Ahhh. ![]()

I'm Kaysie, 22. Jesus follower. Lover of sunshine, trees, hot tea, books, music, family, the gospel, poetry and Barnes and Nobles. Has a weird obsession with paper. Over-analyzes almost everything. Adores simplicity. Lucky for you.

That tea in the morning sounds so nice and peaceful… I should get up early enough to do that.
When I Don’t Desire God sounds especially good. Thanks for sharing your tea and books!
I too love Elisabeth Elliot’s writings. I’m currently reading Let Me Be A Woman. Have you ever read Quest for Love: True stories of Passion and Purity? Exceptionally good. Loved that one. Can’t wait to hear your thoughtson the books!
English Breakfast is also my favorite… well that and Darjeeling! I always love new book suggestions! Thank you for this post!
Kaysie,
You’re going to love “Keep a Quiet Heart!” I’m going through that one as a part of my quiet time each morning.
I seem to switch back and forth between tea and coffee in the morning…I’m trying not to drink coffee as much though. : )
I have “Keep a Quiet Heart” and I’ve probably read it four or five times over the past few years. That kind of encouragement and wisdom just needs to be re-visited!
Hey Kasyie,
The books sounded really good, oh and by the way, have you ever tried Earl Gray tea? (did I spell it right)
Thanks for the suggestions!
Love, Camille
Tea & books… doesn’t get much better!
Megan, I have read “Let Me be a Woman”… it was amazing. But I have not yet read “Quest for Love: True stories of Passion and Purity”. I will have to look into that one. Thanks!
Camille, yes I have tried Earl Grey tea. It is very nice as well. A little more smokey than English Breakfast and has a hint of citrus flavor. (that sounded professional…
) Have you ever tried it before?
Hey. All of those sound like good books. My mom and I were talking about “Respectable Sins” awhile ago. She has been reading it and I tried to guess what those sins were. I got a few of them right! Anything my Piper is always good. I really hope I can go to Desiring God (conference) this year. The topic is on “The Power of Words and the Wonder of God “. Perfect for an aspiring writer.
Nobody416, I want to go to the DG conference so so bad!
Tell me if you get to go.
I loved the topic. I know, perfect for a writer – and talker! Oh well, it is in the Lord’s hands.
Huzzah for the first Tea and Books! I’m really going to like this new feature.
I have a friend who loves Earl Grey so much, he hardly drinks any other tea besides! For myself, I prefer Celestial Seasonings tea, and especially now that I’ve been studying herbs, I also like experimenting with herbal teas. It’s all delicious though!
I agree – there’s nothing like a hot cup of tea in the mornings! (in the winter time at least; I get too hot in the summer and have to revert to ice tea or a wait for a cooler evening)
Kaysie. I have a book for you. It isn’t available to buy but I got a free (legal) down loadable copy from the authors because I was on their email list and signed up for it fast enough. It is by Eric Ludy and it is called, “The Braveheart Gospel”. I have read the first 2 chapters or so and am loving it! It is so good. It will be coming out in the fall. I hope you can buy it then.
This is so cool Kaysie! Thanks for doing this….sometimes I get frustrated because I can’t seem to find really good clean books for teens. I’m very excited about finding great books through your lists!
Thanks again!
Brianna
Considering that you haven’t read very many books, I think you have chosen some excellent ones! I will most certainly keep them in mind for my future reading. =)
Hmmm.
So, at the beginning of the summer I put an end to caffine in my life. No more coffee. Nope. None…The only caffine I get is from the occasional chocolatey somethingrather (a woman can’t readily give this up..coffee was hard enough).
Now I’ve jumped into the world of tea. Herbal tea, that is. What are your favorite herbal teas? I buy celestial seasons and its mainly because I’ve found I like it and am scared to buy something else. I would love my own tea press. *sigh*. Tea seems like such a wonderous morning devotional thing. What do your mornings look like? What time do you get up. I think you should write a post about your perfect devo time (if you already wrote one you should direct me to it.)
Onward to books! Books…I love books. With a deep passion. I love the Good Book, but I love to read other books alongside my dear Bible. As far as Elizabeth Elliot goes…I’m reading “Through the Gates of Splendor” and it is amazing. You are right in assessing her faith. It is incredible and inspiring. All of those missionaries that were involved with the Acuas. Wow.
Kaysie. I want to say that it is always such a pleasure seeing a woman whose just a tad younger than me (I consider it all the same anyways…40 or 13…we are all wonderful women!) who has a passion for writing the deep things of her heart and her pleasures and her delights in the LORD and all He has done and given.
Yay! I have a knack for writting mega huge comments. Ha. Ok. God bless you, girly
-Kristy
Nobody 416, I am already excited about the Braveheart Gospel! Thank you for alerting me to it’s arrival. I will definitely check it out. Thanks!
Kristy, glad to have you back! I have missed your comments.
About tea, I too drink Celestial Seasons herbal teas. They are good, well rounded tea flavors that appeal to the majority. I have branched off into the unknown worlds beyond Celestial Seasons, but was kind of disappointed. Herbal teas are tricky. So I stick (for the most part) with Celestial Seasons.
About my morning devotions… I think it is a great idea to do an entire post on my “perfect” quiet time. That would be fun, and hopefully beneficial to readers. I’ll have to give it a shot.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving me your sweet comment. I like your “huge”comments. God bless you too.
There are two teas I love in particular. Candy Cane Lane which is a combination of vanilla and peppermint. And then there is Merry Mint wihich has both pepper mint and spearmint in it.
Can you tell I like peppermint?!
However, I would also try rooiboos tea. I love South African honeybush. I need to make a cup of that again, so I can describe it!
Yum, those sound good…
Thanks for your professional opinion on earl grey
(I knew I spelled it wrong), Nope, I’ve never tried it, I was just wondering because there is a character in Star Trek who really likes it.
Camille
Ooooh, tea.
I’m not really a tea connoisseur per sey, but I do enjoy it often in the cool months, mostly Celestial Seasonings herb teas, but this year I got into chi tea a bit. Right now for the summer I am busy consuming plenty of bottled Tazo tea – yummy!!
Looks like a nice books list.
You will LOVE “Keep A Quiet Heart”…I received a copy from a friend several years ago, and it’s great because you can take it in little bits. I went through it several times as sort of a daily devotional.
“The Peace Maker” book interests me…one of the reviews on Amazon said that it was geared more towards church/group conflict than person/family conflict. Did you find that to be the case?
Hannah Michelle, “The Peace Maker” shares truths to be applied for all relationships I think. Mr. Sande has a ministry directed towards solving “church conflict” (so it does at times have that flavor), but mostly I found it to be helpful in any conflict, including that of family and friends.
I’m usually a green tea drinker. But the English Breakfast sounds lovely. Do you have a particular brand you’d recommend?
All of those books sound pretty good. I think I may have to check out Respectable Sins because it sounds like there are a lot of sins I commit without really knowing or recognizing it. I can’t wait to see what you have to say about the other books. I ordered Daily Light, which you recommended and I’m anxiously awaiting its delivery.
Cheers!
Hey Coffeegirl,
I highly recommend Twinings English Breakfast tea. I have tired *many* dark teas, but my faithful brand is Twinings. It is usually available at any grocery store. I hope you like it.
I know you will LOVE Daily Light! It is such a good little book, great for refocusing our mind and heart on Scripture.
Hey Kaysie.
I actually wont be able to go to DG this year because my mom is taking down a bunch of ladies and she wants them to be able to share their hearts and all that stuff. But hopefully next year. Also all the sessions are available online for FREE soon after. So I guess I will just do it that way. But maybe next year. If you do go you should meet my mom. She is also a huge fan of Autumn.
