Have We Lost the Joy of Christmas?

23446484

The world seems sad tonight
despite the Christmas lights.
Scurry, hurry, from here to there
pushing past, forgetting care.

Where is all the joy tonight?
Is it lost or out of sight?
This should be our time of hope,
but we are satisfied to cope
with things the way they are
keeping true Love so very far.

I thought the holy Child was born
the One to save us from our scorn,
bringing peace and hope to hearts,
healing all our broken parts.

But we walk on with worried brows
adorning pain and frozen frowns.
Does the Child make no difference?
Are we too busy to feel His presence?

We must stop and shut the door
on the world and crazy chores.
We have waited for this day–
A Child is born to show the Way.

  1. How sad, and what truth…may I link to this on my blog? Thank you!

  2. This spoke to me. It reminded me (in a gentle way) to TRUST in Jesus Christ.

I am having a terrible time adjusting to my move to Tennessee. Last night I received yet another obstacle (not small, pretty huge) to … well, get past in some way. But my reaction to that news, coupled with this post, reminded me of the story of Jesus walking on water, and Peter …NOT walking on water.

Because his internal fear OVERSHADOWED his trust in the Lord, to carry him through seemingly IMPOSSIBLE obstacles, and he failed to put all his trust in Jesus Christ, who told him simply to take his hand, and he would walk on the water, too.

I want to walk with Jesus on water through this Tennessee adventure I’m on.

  3. Jenna, thank you. You may surely add this to your blog if you like. :)

Jillian, it sounds like you are demonstrating a beautiful amount of faith. I am so glad the Lord used this post in any way to help you through this season of foggy circumstances. Jesus is our perfect example, like you said truthfully. Keep walking on in faith, Jillian! He has your hand…

  4. This really stood out to me. I can’t count how many times my mom has made comments about not putting up decorations and a lack of Christmas spirit. I think she’s right; she doesn’t have the true Christmas spirit. She’s focused on the outward appearance of Christmas and not on the inward preparation. The whole world (OK, not the WHOLE world) has the outward signs of Christmas (it has become a commercialized event) and don’t really care about the true meaning. I’m not saying that my focus is perfectly on Christ’s coming, but that’s definitely more important than decorating. In our culture, if you don’t put up lights or a tree or wear the sweater and socks, you’re accused of not having the Christmas spirit. But it’s the internal part that matters more, right? Right!

Bottom line: Non-Christians focus on the decorations, the gifts, the outward expressions of Christmas. But they’re missing the more important part, which is the inward expression and preparation of Christmas.

  6. Wow, that poem is powerful, Kaysie! Thanks for the reminder that Christmas is not about the outward things.

  7. Lori, what great thoughts on the whole “Christmas spirit” thing. Come to think of it, the world is totally consumed by the outward appearances of Christmas instead of the internal meaning and focus — and I think the “Christmas spirit” is our weak attempt to reconcile.

Also, thanks for the link! :)

    Arianna, thank you. :)

  8. Very beautiful poem Kaysie! Christmas with all it’s lights and frills is still empty without Christ… without Christ it’s just Mas… and that’s not very exciting. :p God bless you and your Christmas, Kaysie!

  9. Lovely poem, Kaysie!
How sad, but how true that so many people forget the reason for the season.
Let us pray that we (Christians) do not forget this truth even in the midst of our Christmas preparations!

    Many Blessings,
    Jenny

    P.S.
    Neat Picture! :)

  10. Olivia, thank you! You are so right. Christ without Christmas is very empty and profitless. God bless your Christmas as well! :)

Miss Jen, that is so kind of you. It is so easy to forget the reason we celebrate. I want to get better at remembering. :) Blessings to you too!
